Orbeli Fortress is a striking example of medieval Georgian military architecture. Built to control key routes through Lechkhumi and protect local communities, the fortress formed part of a strategic network of fortifications safeguarding the region’s inhabitants and treasures. Orbeli Fortress is a remarkable multi-level defensive complex composed of an upper and lower fortress, reflecting sophisticated medieval military planning. The upper fortress rises on a rocky elevation and includes the gate tower and citadel, which unites the main tower with adjoining structures to the south and east. Its circular courtyard is enclosed by a fortified platform attached to the bastion wall, once linking the gate tower to the upper floor of the citadel. Below, the lower fortress incorporates three defensive towers set within the southern and western enclosure walls, as well as the remains of a stone church, a reservoir, and traces of what were once a wooden church and bell tower. 

Though substantially damaged following the 1991 earthquake, the surviving towers, complete with observation holes, niches, and distinctive pointed arches, convey the architectural complexity and former strength of this strategic stronghold, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into Lechkhumi’s layered medieval past. Its robust stone walls, watchtowers, and fortified pathways reflect centuries of adaptation to evolving defense needs, including the introduction of firearms. Archaeological finds in the area, including ancient tombs, icons and artifacts, testify to long-standing human presence and the fortress’s cultural significance.

Today, visitors can reach Orbeli Fortress via scenic trails from nearby villages, following paths that wind through forested slopes and rocky terrain. From the hilltop, panoramic views of Lechkhumi’s valleys and surrounding mountains offer both breathtaking photo opportunities and a sense of the fortress’s historic strategic importance.
