Muri fortress

Monastery of Maximus the Confessor

Perched atop a rugged hill in Tsageri municipality, Muri Fortress is one of Lechkhumi’s most impressive medieval fortifications. Built to guard the strategic Takveri Road and control access between northern tribes and Western Georgia, it formed part of a vital network protecting the local population and the treasures of Khvamli. The fortress complex, which includes the nearby Ragvi Tower, features towering stone walls, watchtowers, and ancient pathways, many of which were reinforced over centuries to adapt to evolving military threats, including the introduction of firearms. Archaeological finds, including ancient tombs, bronze and gold artifacts, and the monastery at the base associated with the 7th-century Saint Maximus the Confessor, reflect the site’s long-standing cultural and historical importance. Legends of courageous resistance against Ottoman invasions add to its aura, making it a symbol of resilience and heritage.

Visitors can reach Muri Fortress using steps directly from Alpana-Tsageri road.

The climb rewards travelers with panoramic views, making it a perfect destination for history enthusiasts, hikers, and photographers seeking both adventure and insight into Georgia’s medieval past.
